And now he’s attending spiritual tea parties/weddings, so I think he found his happy ending…which is just the best.

Korra opened both gates, not knowing how she might have doomed the universe by trying to save her friend (who, gasp! Unalaq didn’t let free anyways). Probably the most impactful thing about “A New Spiritual Age” aside from its thematic exploration and beautiful visuals was how, in a single scene, it totally raised the stakes.
Can this show possibly get any more beautiful? I don’t know…but “A New Spiritual Age” once again set the bar for one of the best looking shows on television. Which, by the way, this animated was once again animated by Studio Mir-which is pretty obvious actually. This was another huge callback to Avatar: The Last Airbender but, just like with Iroh, I think this one worked within “A New Spiritual Age.” Hector Elizondo once again returned to voice the library guardian spirit Wan Shi Tong who, apparently, still only knows 10,000 things (seriously, it’s been 70 years-he should at least be up to 11,000 now!) Jinora’s discovery lead us to another wonderfully animated scene in the style of “Beginnings,” which is perfectly a good thing.
Meanwhile Jinora went on her own adventure, as she found herself separated from her Avatar companion-and inside the now Spirit World house library. And who else can you better call upon when your character is going through a lot of issues? No one, that’s who. Well I was a little perplexed why Iroh was in the spirit world, considering the character, I guess it makes a lot of sense. And the character was in fine enough form tonight to make up for any vocal shortcomings. And though it was sad that we couldn’t get Mako back (the voice actor, not the character), his Season 3 fill in Greg Baldwin continued to do justice to the man’s legacy. I LOVED Iroh, and it was great to see his warm presence back on the show. I was shocked when he came out of freaking nowhere to help a young Korra, but I’m almost certain I cheered. Let’s talk the friend first-General Mother Fucking Iroh. “A New Spiritual Age” is probably the best look we’ve gotten so far at the spirit world, and it was mostly a grand and exciting adventure as Korra came face to face with her biggest fears and darkest tendencies, and Jinora learned more about what the Harmonic Convergence actually represents.Įach were assisted in their respective quests by two familiar faces from the past-one clear friend, and one clear foe. Though the human world has changed quite a bit since the time of Aang and the gang, the spirit world never changes-it only gets more elaborate. This is the closest I think the Legend of Korra has ever come to feeling like an episode of The Last Airbender, which makes sense considering the subject matter. But you know what? I’m a fan-and I just got serviced. The Legend of Korra has straddled that line well throughout the past two seasons, but comes closest to crossing the line throughout the episode. Because of that they specifically choose when and when not to refer to the original series-when including a flashback with Aang or an ancestor of Zuko is important to the story, or mere fan service.

Well they weren’t against referring back to the show in its entirety, they did want the show to stand on its own as a brand new series in the same old universe, rather than a direct sequel to Airbender. From the beginning of The Legend of Korra, both Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko took a staunch position against over referring back to The Last Airbender, the series that first proceeded the show.
